Opening Doors: NJCC Partners with Arc Morris to Provide Free Chess Memberships

At the New Jersey Chess Club, we measure success not just by tournament trophies, but by the doors we open and the communities we strengthen. This month, we're proud to announce a new partnership with Arc Morris—a transformative initiative that provides free NJCC memberships to their members, creating a dedicated, welcoming space where chess is about joy, growth, and belonging.

The Connection: From CCM to Community
The partnership began organically through NJCC Director Vince Alize's ongoing mentorship at County College of Morris's (CCM) Chess Club. There, Vince met Josiah, President of the CCM Chess Club and an active member of Arc Morris. Witnessing Josiah's leadership and passion, Vince recognized an opportunity to extend NJCC's resources beyond traditional pathways. The conversation shifted from campus chess to community impact—specifically, how to create a space where Arc Morris members could explore chess without barriers.

The Initiative: Free Access, Focused on Inclusion
Effective immediately, Arc Morris members receive complimentary access to NJCC's Morristown location every Saturday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Held at the Morristown Masonic Center (39 Maple Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960), these sessions are designed as pressure-free environments where the focus is on enjoyment, social interaction, and gradual skill development—not competition.

Why This Matters
For many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, structured recreational opportunities can be limited by cost, accessibility, or social anxiety. By removing financial barriers and cultivating a deliberately supportive atmosphere, we're not just teaching chess—we're building confidence, fostering social connections, and demonstrating that strategic thinking belongs to everyone.

A Space Designed for Belonging
The Saturday sessions feature:

  • Adapted Instruction: Lessons tailored to varied learning styles and paces

  • Peer Mentorship: Integration with NJCC's "Colonial Knight" mentors

  • Social Focus: Emphasis on camaraderie over competitive results

  • Zero Pressure: No ratings, no tournaments—just pure chess enjoyment

Josiah's Perspective
"Arc Morris has given me so much," says Josiah. "When Vince offered to create this space at NJCC, it felt like someone finally understood that chess isn't just about winning—it's about thinking, connecting, and having a place where you're welcomed exactly as you are. Now my friends at Arc can experience that too."

Vince Alize on the Partnership
"Meeting Josiah was a reminder that chess clubs should be gateways, not gatekeepers," says Vince. "These members deserve the same opportunity to experience the focus, friendship, and fun that chess provides. If we can remove even one barrier to entry, we're fulfilling our mission as the New Jersey Chess Club."

Join Us in Building Inclusive Communities
This partnership represents a core NJCC belief: chess transcends the board. It's about community, accessibility, and creating spaces where everyone can develop their strategic potential.

We invite our members to welcome Arc Morris participants with the same spirit of sportsmanship and support that defines our club. Together, we're proving that the most powerful moves aren't always on the board—sometimes, they're the ones that open doors.
