Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual New York Metro Area Scholastic Chess Championships, taking place Saturday and Sunday, January 2–3, 2027 at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

2027 New York Metro Area Scholastic Chess Championships
Last year's inaugural Metros brought nearly 1,450 young chess players to Times Square.
This year, we are preparing for an even larger championship weekend.
We wanted to give our chess families, schools, coaches and clubs plenty of advance notice so everyone has time to plan.
We will send additional tournament details and updates as the event approaches.
Tournament Format
The 2027 Metros will feature 17 sections designed for K–12 players across a wide range of experience and rating levels.
5 Two-Day Championship Sections
6 rounds • G/70 d5 • Open to any rating
12 One-Day Under Sections
5 rounds • G/30 d5 • Rating-capped sections
Players may compete Saturday or Sunday. Eligible players may also play both Saturday and Sunday in two separate Under sections.
Sections are available for all grades with K–1, Primary (K-3), Elementary (K-5), Middle School (K-8) and High School (K-12) sections.
Summer Early Bird Registration
Summer Early Bird registration is available through September 30, 2026.
Basic Entry
$100 for a one-day tournament
$125 for a two-day Championship
Entry PLUS
$140 for a one-day tournament
$205 for a two-day Championship
These are the lowest prices available for the 2027 Metros.
Families who register during the Summer Early Bird period will also have all refund processing fees waived if they need to cancel by November 15.
A Note for Coaches and School Organizers
If you are bringing a school, chess club, academy or organized team, please contact us early if you are interested in a Team Room.
Every available Team Room was claimed last year.
We expect significant demand again this year, and rooms will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Team Rooms provide players, coaches and families with a dedicated home base inside the Marriott Marquis where they can prepare before rounds, analyze games afterward, meet with coaches, eat and relax between rounds, and spend the weekend together as a team.
You do not need to know your final number of players before contacting us.
It is much easier for us to plan space with you early than to try to find a room after they have all been claimed.

Keepsakes for Every Player
Every player will receive a full-sized custom recognition medal with spinning insert to memorialize their hard work at the Metros.
Every player will also receive a pack of Official Chess® Trading Cards.
Individual and team awards will be presented throughout the championship weekend.
No Personal Coach? We Have You Covered.
Players can select Entry PLUS for access to our Coaches Corner, where experienced Master-level players and professional coaches will be available to review games and help players learn between rounds.
